Restricted Key Systems

Controlled key duplication and restricted key systems for commercial and managed properties.

Restricted key systems for controlled duplication

A restricted key system is designed to reduce unauthorised key copying. Instead of relying on an ordinary key that may be duplicated without the property manager knowing, additional restricted keys are supplied through an agreed authorisation process.

Abetta Mobile Locksmith supplies and maintains restricted key systems for Sunshine Coast businesses, body corporates, offices, workshops, managed properties and facilities. We work with systems we genuinely support, including Series Six and other suitable commercial platforms.

What restriction actually controls

Restriction does not make a key impossible to lose, lend or misuse. It controls the process for ordering additional keys. The system authority nominates who can approve duplication and how requests are verified. This creates stronger accountability than an unrestricted keyway.

Restricted keys and master keys are different

A restricted key system controls duplication. A master key system controls which doors each key operates. They can be used separately or combined. A restricted master key system is often useful where both access levels and key-copying control matter.

Where restricted systems are commonly used

Planning the authority structure

Before installing a system, decide who can approve keys, who keeps the records and what happens when a key is lost or a staff member leaves. The physical system and the administrative process need to support each other.

A practical key register should record the key number, holder, issue date, return date and authorised access level. Restricted keys are most effective when the register is maintained rather than left to gather digital cobwebs.

Can existing locks be converted?

Some existing locks can accept compatible restricted cylinders or be reconfigured. Others may need replacement. The answer depends on the lock body, cylinder format, door condition and the selected system. Abetta can inspect the site and identify what can reasonably be retained.

Restricted key system FAQs

Can anyone copy a restricted key?

No authorised supplier should produce an additional key without following the system authority arrangements. The exact process depends on the system and registration details.

What if a restricted key is lost?

Report it promptly and identify its access level. Depending on the risk, affected locks may need to be rekeyed or altered so the missing key no longer works.

Can contractors have limited access?

Yes. A properly planned system can provide a contractor key that opens only nominated service areas or common doors.

Is a restricted system suitable for a small business?

Often, yes. Even a modest site can benefit where key copying, staff turnover or access accountability has become difficult to manage.

Discuss restricted keys for your property

Tell us the property type, number of doors, current keyway and the duplication problem you want to solve. We can explain suitable options without pretending every site needs the most elaborate system on the shelf.
