The basic problem solved by a lock is ancient: how can a barrier move for an authorised person but resist everyone else? Long before compact metal cylinders, people built large wooden mechanisms whose moving parts already expressed one of lockmaking’s most enduring ideas.

The Egyptian wooden pin lock
In the best-known ancient design, a wooden bolt slid across a door. Pins dropped from the case into holes in the bolt and prevented it moving. A large wooden key, fitted with pegs, was inserted below and lifted the pins. When the pins were raised to the necessary level, the bolt could slide.
This is often called the ancestor of the modern pin-tumbler lock. The family resemblance is genuine: both depend on lifting separate pins to a useful position. But a modern cylinder has paired driver and key pins aligned at a precise shear line, tiny springs, close tolerances and a rotating plug. The ancient mechanism was not simply today’s cylinder made from wood.
What the surviving evidence shows
Museum collections preserve wooden locks and keys from Egypt and neighbouring regions. They show that locks could be functional pieces of carpentry as well as security devices. A wooden key could be roughly the size of a modern hand tool, because it had to reach into a substantial door-mounted mechanism.
Assigning a single inventor or exact invention date is much harder. Organic materials decay, surviving objects may be later than the ideas they embody, and similar mechanical principles can travel or be rediscovered. “Among the earliest surviving mechanical locks” is more defensible than claiming one object was unquestionably the first lock ever made.
Other ancient traditions
Greek and Roman makers used bolts, wards, springs and metal keys in numerous forms. Roman metalworking enabled smaller keys, including keys worn as rings. Portability mattered: as locks moved from monumental doors to chests, boxes and personal possessions, key size and mechanism design changed with them.
Why the pin idea endured
Pins let a designer create many possible key patterns from repeated components. That is the germ of a powerful security concept: the lock does not merely block movement; it tests a coded physical shape. Centuries later, precision manufacturing made that test smaller, more repeatable and far harder to defeat casually.
