Electronic access control changed the key from a shaped piece of metal into information. A credential can now be a code, magnetic pattern, radio token, phone, fingerprint or remotely managed identity. The door still needs sound mechanical hardware, but the decision to unlock can be made and recorded electronically.

Electric release and remote control
Electromagnets and electrically operated strikes allowed a receptionist, guard or control circuit to release a door from a distance. Early systems were often simple: a button completed a circuit. Their significance was organisational—permission could be controlled from somewhere other than the keyhole.
Codes and cards
Keypads made a memorised code the credential. Card systems encoded identity on punched, magnetic or later electronic media. Hotels became an important proving ground because a lost mechanical master key or unreturned room key created an expensive rekeying problem. Reprogrammable credentials allowed access to expire when a guest checked out.
Proximity, smart cards and mobile credentials
Radio-frequency credentials removed the need to insert or swipe a card. More capable smart cards supported stronger exchanges with the reader. Phones then combined credential storage, communication and user authentication, although implementation quality and recovery procedures remain critical.
Biometrics
Biometric systems test a characteristic of the person rather than something carried or remembered. They can be convenient, but they are probabilistic systems and raise privacy, enrolment and fallback questions. A fingerprint cannot be replaced as casually as a lost card, and a biometric reader still needs secure wiring, software and door hardware.
Smart locks and connected risk
Connected locks add remote administration, temporary permissions and audit trails. They also expand the system that must be protected: apps, accounts, cloud services, firmware, wireless protocols and power supply. Good electronic security includes mechanical override planning, credential cancellation, updates and a clear response when communications fail.
The continuing role of locksmithing
Electronic access did not make mechanical locksmithing obsolete. Doors still bind, latches still need alignment, fire and egress rules still apply, cylinders provide override, and a system is only as strong as its physical installation. Modern locksmithing increasingly sits at the boundary between mechanics, electronics and access policy.
