Ogden Industries and the History of Lockwood in Australia

How John Stanley Ogden, Ogden Industries and Australian manufacturing helped establish Lockwood as a defining local security brand.

Australian lock pioneers · Lockwood

Few names are as closely associated with Australian door hardware as Lockwood. Its Australian story is inseparable from John Stanley Ogden and Ogden Industries—but it also reaches back to American founders and forward into today’s global ASSA ABLOY group.

Before the Australian story

The Lockwood name originated with American lockmaking enterprise associated with Henry Sanford Lockwood and Morris Falk. As with many industrial brands, later ownership, licensing and manufacturing arrangements make the complete corporate history more complicated than a single founding date.

John Stanley Ogden and Ogden Industries

Lockwood’s official Australian history describes John Stanley Ogden, founder of Ogden Industries, as instrumental in introducing the Lockwood brand to Australia. Lockwood dates its Australian manufacturing history to 1934 and celebrated 90 years in 2024.

Ogden’s importance lies not merely in importing a name. Local manufacture created skills, tooling, supplier relationships and products suited to Australian construction. Over time, “Lockwood” became less an exotic overseas label and more part of the everyday Australian built environment.

From factory product to familiar standard

Lockwood hardware appeared across houses, businesses and institutions. Mortice locks, rim locks, cylinders, padlocks, door closers and architectural hardware gave locksmiths and builders a broad system rather than a single product. Familiarity mattered: products could be specified, serviced and keyed within an established ecosystem.

Changing ownership

Companies evolve through acquisitions and reorganisations. Lockwood is now part of ASSA ABLOY, the international access-solutions group. That modern ownership does not erase the Australian manufacturing history, but it is important not to describe today’s company as though its structure were unchanged since Ogden Industries.

The significance of an Australian brand

Lockwood’s longevity reflects more than advertising. Australian doors face distinctive demands: heavy use, varied construction, coastal conditions, screen and sliding-door applications, and regulatory requirements. A durable local brand becomes woven into trade knowledge—how products fail, how they are serviced, and which generations can be upgraded without replacing an entire door.

A history still worth documenting

Manufacturer histories naturally emphasise milestones. A fuller account also belongs in catalogues, patents, newspapers, trade material and the memories of locksmiths who installed each generation. This page will be expanded as more primary Australian material is identified.

Lockwood in the wider Australian trade

LSC’s January 2026 centenary newsletter describes Lockwood as a leading Australian locking brand and places it beside other locally significant makers. Its April 2026 issue recalls Lockwood among the Australian manufacturers expanding during the 1960s. These trade recollections support the broad industry context; the dates and Ogden connection on this page remain anchored to Lockwood’s official history.
